Exodus

Well, planning for an eventual Exodus, anyway.

We live in a parsonage (aka “vicarage” or “manse”), which means we neither own nor rent our home. My husband, the planner, has been thinking lately how this means we are not building up any equity in a house and will have no place to live after he retires as housing is provided by his job. This means that we have been going over “options” lately for preparing for an event 27 years in the future: Do we buy a house now and rent it out? Do we buy a house now in a summer location that we can use during vacations although we don’t live in it? Do we buy land and have a house built? Do we just plan on living in a Winnebago parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot in our old age? But there are a lot of things that we can’t decide yet, so I’m having trouble getting very gung-ho about the whole thing. Dreaming about planning for eventualities without being able to make definitive plans is tiring. Tell me when to buy a house, tell me how much I can spend, and I’ll be all over it.
